Descending into Light
The Map
An experiential map of human development.
This work is not an invitation to believe.
It is an invitation to experience it for yourself.

This work rests on a simple proposition: relationship is the organising principle of human development, and participation is the living process through which development unfolds.

We are never outside relationship. From the moment there is an “I” and something else — a feeling, a person, a moment, a mystery — relationship is already given. It cannot be avoided. What can change is its quality: how defended or how open, how guarded or how free.

That quality doesn’t stay fixed. It matures. Someone who has genuinely developed compassion carries it quietly, even alone in a room with no one to be compassionate toward. But it is only truly tested and deepened where it meets life — in a difficult conversation, an old wound, an unexpected loss. This is participation: relationship, lived.

The Threshold Wheel — thirteen thresholds across four movements

It moves as a spiral, not a ladder — each threshold revisited many times, each return bringing a little more capacity to meet what is here.

The purpose of this work is not simply to deepen understanding, but to transform the quality of our participation in life.

Development is not something we possess. It is something we live.
